INTRODUCTION
While the book explains in elaborate detail the wonderful ramifications of man finding God, here we will simply relate David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D.'s actual experience.
"…I didn't settle quietly into professional life: I succumbed to a progressive and fatal illness that did not respond to any available treatment. By the time I was 38, I knew I was about to die. I didn't care about my body, but my spirit was in a state of extreme anguish and despair. As my final moment approached, the thought flashed through my mind, What if there is a God? So I called out in prayer, “If there is a God, I ask him to help me now.” I surrendered to whatever God there might be, and went unconscious. When I awoke, a transformation of such enormity had taken place that I was struck dumb with awe.
The person that I had been no longer existed. There was no personal self or ego left-just an Infinite Presence of such unlimited power that it was all that was.
... Everything and everyone in the world was luminous and exquisitely beautiful. All living things became radiant, and expressed their radiance in stillness and splendor. It was apparent that all of mankind is actually motivated by inner love, but has simply become unaware; most people live their lives as if they're sleepers unawakened to the perception of who they really are. Everyone looked as if they were asleep, but they were incredibly beautiful-I was in love with everyone...
...This spiritual love permeated all of my perception; all boundaries between here and there, then and now, or me and you disappeared...
…As I looked at each person, my self shone from their eyes. How did I get into all these bodies? I wondered…
…Many chronic maladies from which I had suffered for years disappeared; my eyesight spontaneously normalized...
…The Presence is silent and conveys a state of peace. It’s infinitely gentle and yet like a rock. With it, all fear disappears, and spiritual joy occurs on a quiet level of inexplicable ecstasy. Because the experience of time stops, there’s no apprehension, regret, pain, or anticipation; the source of joy is unending and ever-present. With no beginning and no ending, there can be no loss, grief, or desire-and nothing needs to be done, for everything is already perfect and complete.
When time stops, all problems disappear, for they are merely artifacts of a point of perception. As the Presence prevails, there is no further identification with the body or mind…."
This is but one example of an ordinary person finding God. Even an agnostic like Dr. Hawkins! The book examines other examples of this mystical state and the spiritual road that each person followed.
